5 Life Lessons I’ve Learnt From Surfing

Nearly a decade of surfing under my belt and I am still getting to know what surfing really is all about. There’s an old saying floating around the surfing community, one that really only a few live by religiously.
Surfing is not just a sport, it is a way of life’
And once you get bitten by the surfing bug, you can see how your life can revolve around this epic sport.
You start to skip work early to fit a surf in at the best tide and you start to do your fitness routine revolving around ‘paddling exercises’. You may even feel pretty down in the dumps if you can’t go for a surf that day. The need to go surfing is a weird, weird feeling.
For me, surfing is part of my life but unfortunately it is not a huge part of it and doesn’t revolve totally around it. Does yours?
My world does however benefit from surfing so here I have shared a few life lessons I have learnt from surfing and maybe you can start to reflect on how surfing is benefitting your life too!

Surfing has taught me about Patience.
Waiting for that wave, waiting for the tide, waiting for the time when you don’t have to surf in cold water anymore. Surfing definitely requires some patience in order to get the best conditions or the wave that you went out there searching for. Practicing this waiting around business, to do something that you love never gets easy but the more you work on your patience, the better your reward.

Surfing has taught me about Commitment.
When its freezing temperatures outside but the waves are clean and offshore and the perfect size for a fun surf, it takes allot of effort and commitment to get yourself in the surf. Some may find it comes easy when they know that they are about to get some good waves. But for most of us, the thought of putting a thick wetsuit on or even jumping in the sea when you are already really tired takes allot of commitment. If you want to be good at surfing, which most of us are striving for, you have got to take the plunge. If your surfboard could talk it would say ‘You have to!’. Try and make it easier on yourself, go to be early for that extra kick of energy or put your cold wet wetsuit on in a warm shower…make committing easier for yourself!

Surfing has taught me about Time management.
When surfing, there is allot of waiting around, there is allot of squeezing in a surf when you’re not really supposed to, setting your alarm and waking up early to jump in the sea before work. It’s all about testing the time barriers. And the task is to not over-run your surfing time, to not be late for work or to not miss a planned Sunday roast with your family. A waterproof watch can become a pretty essential item if you are to get good at this time management thing.

Surfing has taught me about Health and Fitness.
If you practice the art of surfing, you are bound to be improving your health and fitness the more you surf. Some people surf and don’t even think about it as exercise. There are so many health benefits that I couldn’t list them all but it makes me realise that doing activities you enjoy to exercise is so much easier than just hitting the gym and running on a treadmill for miles and miles, with no thrills or excitement.

Surfing has taught me about Community. If there is one thing that has surprised me about surfing, is the community that comes with the sport. The support from others out in the water and the friendships that can form from just being out in the line up is so up-lifting. The travelling surfing community too can be a great thing to be involved in, you may even discover new surf spots just by talking to someone, sharing the same surfing interests as you.Winning!
Be thankful that surfing is in your life and if it is not, I totally recommend to get involved!
