5 reasons to go on a surf trip to… Costa Rica

Costa Rica has 755 miles of coastline on two oceans, meaning a heck load of waves.

The setups range from idyllic beach breaks, with palm fringed backdrops to terrifying coral reefs where the waves jack up and tube like a miniature Pipeline. The water temperature is also 30c year round, no wetsuits needed! Basically it’s a surfer’s paradise, but here are five other reasons why every surfer must visit this beautiful country:

#1. Food: The history of Caribbean and Latin influences combined with the country’s natural treasures means that local dishes are delicious yet simple and traveler-budget friendly. Think the freshest fish caught straight from the ocean, organic local produce growing around your head and Costa Rican Coffee is the best in the world…

#2. Consistency: Because of where it is, Costa Rica is one of the most consistent surf spots in the World. It’s right by the Equator and is vulnerably open to the Pacific Ocean, which means swells from both the Northern Hemisphere (November – March), and the Southern Hemisphere (pretty much year-round).

#3. Natural Wonders: Even as you step out of San Jose airport and inhale a large lungful of the surprisingly unhumid and gloriously fresh air, you see that you are surrounded by the lungs of the earth; there’s rainforest all around surrounded by active Volcanos towering into the clouds extending as far as the horizon. More than 25% of Costa Rica’s land is dedicated to national parks, reserves and wildlife refuges and you see loads of wildlife when surfing; turtle and rays in the line up and pelicans darting past your head. It’s all pretty breathtaking stuff!

#4. Pura Vida. The Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica (where we run our surf and yoga camps) is recognized as one of only 5 ‘Blue Zones’ in the world! This means that the local people tend to live longer, healthier lives. This is down to their Pura Vida lifestyle, which is a welcome break from normal day to day life and struggles, and a truly ideal pace of life where you can appreciate how beautiful life can be.  Pura Vida is all about love; love to the land, the ocean, your environment, yourself and the people and in Costa Rica there’s a lot of love.

#5 Don Jon: Senor Jon owns Don Jon’s Surf Lodge and it’s worth visiting the place just to see him! His motto, actually his philosophy is; “relax to the max” and relax all of our guests do. His is the most chilled guy ever but always keen to throw impromptu parties. There are more hammocks than beds, perfect for a quick nap or reading session and the overall vibe in the sleepy surf camp will see you return home suitable refreshed and relaxed.
There’s a hundred reasons to visit Costa Rica, but you really do have to visit the place for yourself to appreciate it.
