Nicaragua, and San Juan del Sur (SJDS) in particular, is great for surfing. But during your one or two week stay, there is so much more to do to enrich your experience. Below you will find an overview of the great things you can do in and around SJDS, a list drawn up after our visit to this amazing surf town.
Surf Camp in San Juan del Sur
The surf camp is located close to Playa Maderas, which is about 8 km. out of the towns centre. A couple of times per day the surf camp offers a shuttle to town, free of charge. Otherwise you can always grab one of the shuttles (like a regular bus) which passes by the beach or the camp regularly, which will only cost you USD 2.50 per person. So in case you’d like to go out for lunch or dinner, go partying or shopping, it’s easy to get around.
In the town there are numerous bars and restaurants, offering food from all over the world. There’s a small food market where you can find local dishes for very affordable prices. Especially the local vibe left its memory after our visit to San Juan del Sur. Also the street food which you can find around SJDS was of good quality, making a stroll around even more fun.
Watersports in San Juan del Sur
For the ones who like to be on the water there are several options, ranging from sailing and catamaran trips to guided fishing adventures. Go out there with experiences fishermen and catch fish like you’ve never done before. After you caught a fish, you can easily go to a restaurant and ask them to prepare it for you. The catamaran trips are very recommendable to do in the afternoon, when you are going to end the day with an amazing sunset in the bay of SJDS. Furthermore, there are different spots which are amazing for snorkelling and also the turtle-tours are well worth a go.
Activities in the surf camp
In the surf camp in San Juan del Sur a lot of activities are being organized as well. The game night is always a great way for people to get to know each other and also the movie night (with obviously a surf movie and popcorn) is popular. Towards the weekend you can count on open-mic nights, a pool party in the camp and the legendary Sunday Funday. Also the picknick at the beach, organized by the surf camp, is very popular. Everything will be taken care of and you will obviously not miss the incredible sunset.
Get around in San Juan del Sur
A great way to get around San Juan del Sur is to do so by motor or scooter. There are a lot of rental places and this allows you even more freedom. You are well recommended to visit one of the nearby beaches or drive up to the Jesus-statue, providing you with great sunsets and an amazing view across the town and bay of San Juan del Sur. Given the fact that your surf lessons will be around 10 hours per week, you have plenty of time to do the most amazing activities and we can advise you to use it wisely. These weeks you will never forget.
