David and Filipe teach surfing in Ericeira

David and Filipe are both surf teachers at the Surf Village Ericeira. They are both passionate, full of energy and very experienced surfers. Surfing is their passion, which they want to share with other surfers. Read more about their experiences as surfing instructors!

David, who are you?

I’m David and I was born here in Ericeira. I am a surf teacher for more than 3 years.

What do you like most about teaching?

Surfing really is my passion so I love doing it. Trying to share this passion with students is what I like the most. I always start with making people comfortable at the ocean as I truly believe they need to feel at ease in order to really enjoy. From there we can take the next steps. One of my main goals always is to make people understand the sport. Almost everyone who visits the surf camp in Ericeira does not have great opportunities to go surfing back home. Therefore I really try to achieve a memory they will take with them, a memory they will think back to the next time they go surfing, whether that would be in a couple of weeks from now, or next year.

Do you surf every day?

Of course, if I am able I go surfing! It really is the thing I love the most.

Why do people come to Ericeira?

Because it is the place to be! We have the best surf school, we have 300 days of sun and we have the best people living here! Also the place is a top spot for surfers from all levels.

Filipe, what do you do?

This year I will reach my 8th year as a surf teacher. I am the head coach of the surf camp and like David, surfing really is my passion, which I practise now already for 15 years. Besides normal surfing, I do bodyboarding, skim boarding, body surfing and other disciplines.

What is your favourite beach to surf?

My favourite beach to go surfing is a beach not far from here. The place is called Sao Sebastiao and I live 50 meters away from the beach. It is an amazing break, left handed and due to the difficultness you really need to have a lot of experience in order to surf it. This is also the spot where I hang out with my friends most of the time, and when the great waves are coming, everyone grabs their board and we go surfing together.

What do you like most about teaching?

I really like to be in contact with the ocean. When I am in that state, I can best explain my passion to others, so that they really feel what I am talking about. I find it amazing and inspiring to see how surfing can change someone’s life.
