Day in the life of Dave

Errant surf coach Dave (a.k.a. Grom) takes us through his day…

Waking up to the sound of waves crashing and the sun coming through the window everyday, I know there are few jobs like this. I’ve been a surf coach for Errant for the past year and a bit. I lived in Northern Spain for 6 months last year, before South Morocco for the winter, then headed back here for this summer. Not a bad year hey?

Most mornings I have breakfast with the guests and the head surf coach Damien. We all chat about the day’s conditions and any goals they have for the lessons. After a few cups of tea and maybe some cake, we head downstairs to the surf school where we issue the equipment and get suited. A quick three minute walk and we’re all down at the beach checking out what’s on offer for the day.

On the beach, like any surf school, we have a warm up and a chat about beach safety. Depending on the levels of the group, we may split the abilities before hitting the water. Damien and I feel this helps ensure that every student gets as much attention and coaching as possible. Making sure they get the encouragement and feedback they need in order to bring out that Cheshire-cat-like grin that all us surfers get in the water.

Every surf lesson and every surfer are different. We as instructors find our own ways of teaching and our own delivery style. Damien and I have to asses the conditions and the ability levels of the group before hitting the waves. Here in Spain, we coach surfers from a complete beginner to advanced surfers looking to improve their techniques.

Out here our surf lessons run until lunch. This gives me time in the afternoons to get some much needed lunch, cake and more tea before heading back in the water for some free surfing. In the summer months especially, the winds are super light first and last thing. I usually head back out for a glassy evening session on the Longboard with a few locals.

In the evenings the guests and I enjoy some homemade Spanish food, made right here at La Hosteria. I work at our bar for a few hours before hitting the hay, ready to start it all over again.
