Kevin’s 3rd SurfaWhile holiday; Surfing in Loredo

Kevin has been on holiday twice with SurfaWhile, including in 2018, when we met him during our visit to the Gota d’Agua Surf House in Caparica, Portugal. In the summer of 2019, he went with his brother and good friend Noëll to northern Spain, to relax for a week and to surf a lot. Afterwards we spoke to Kevin again.

Surfing in Northern Spain

“I just wanted to go on vacation, nothing on my mind and really ‘get away from it all’. You will certainly succeed at Latas Surf House. I really enjoyed the whole rhythm around Latas. It actually felt like a kind of all-inclusive, I thought it was good that everything was arranged, from breakfast in the morning to walking through the woods and dunes to the surf spot to a volleyball tournament or joint barbecue in the evening. I loved it. The rhythm of the days , specifically that place close to nature, people and surfing, really just ‘get away from it all’ – don’t mind your head and don’t think about where or what you are going to eat, just follow the rhythm of the waves and do whatever you want. “”

Surf class at the beach

Lots of variety and lots of surfing

” The days were as follows: breakfast in the morning, then some time for yourself, depending on which group you were in at 10 or 11 am surfing lessons, then lunch at the cottage, some time for yourself until 4 pm and then you could choose whether you wanted to surf freely with the entire group in the afternoon or just wanted to relax, then dinner and afterwards you could possibly join in with yoga or join an activity or just chill in the lounge / in your room. Sometimes there were also some who wanted to visit Santander, which is a very nice city on the other side of the bay. Of course you were free to do whatever you want, taking lessons or taking a day off was no problem at all.”

Helpful staff

” Surfing went pretty well for me, partly due to the clear explanation and the goodwill of the staff. No question was too much and I was particularly struck by the involvement of the surf instructors. They literally sit next to or behind you on the waves and explain everything; from how the waves arise to why you fell for the umpteenth time (because this is going to happen and it is wonderful, believe me). One lesson will always stay with me and that was immediately said in the first lesson: “Don’t fight the waves, you’ll lose.” You will discover this and your own experience works best with that. If you’ve ever surfed, you know what I mean.”

” The group that I was in was very chill, because you are classified by level so you are all in the same boat. Surfing for me for the first time and I actually didn’t know anything. Within a few days I no longer just saw a container of water, but I saw “a good wave” coming in the distance. The combination of theory, practice and direct feedback provided a solid basis for learning how to surf. Precisely because of the openness, the joint food and the activities you see more than just your bedroom. Something I saw as a big plus. You meet people from all over the world and everyone is there for the same reason; namely to learn to surf ”, says Kevin.

” I also thought it was nice that everything is in one place. The wetsuits, surfboards and teachers are assigned to you behind the house and then you go together to the beach where you can walk to in 10-15 minutes. Carrying such a surfboard is always a thing, because how do you carry it conveniently? A nice challenge every time hahah. On your head, under your arm, with two arms or switching between all three, which is the way I found the most convenient. “

My second visit to Latas

” I was here for the first time in the summer of 2018 and found this place so nice that I was sure I would go there again and I did that last summer! With two others, who had become just as enthusiastic about my stories. I can only recommend this place, I only have positive things to say about Latas

” Oh, and before i forget, there was a photographer on the beach every day, where you could buy all the photos specifically from you for a few euro’s at the end of your holiday. Something that I thought was more than worth it. All in all, it made sure that I had an unforgettable holiday, again. “

Surfing in 2020

“” About my new surfing vacation; I am not looking yet, but soon I wanted to do that for the summer in advance, so good to know that there are a number of new destinations, I will definitely look at the website around that time! “
