When you think of surf photography you soon think of clear blue water, white beaches and palm trees. The vast majority of the surf photos that you see are taken in warm tropical destinations. Yet in the Netherlands there are more than enough photographers who know how to capture surfing in the gray North Sea like you’ve never seen before.
Michal Pelka is a surf photographer from Monster and has a passion for the outdoors and surfing. He has managed to make beautiful images from all over the world. Michal sees photography as a way to capture and share special moments with people who cannot experience such experiences. He has lived in Australia for a while, with the Indian Ocean as a canvas his passion for water and surf photography originated there. You may have seen his images in surf magazines and in National Geographic, but his Instagram page is certainly worth a look!
Damian Davilla is a photographer from Belgium who has developed all his photography skills himself. He already took his first surf photos in the 90s, but in 2012 he decided to do this professionally. He grew up in Baja Mexico practically on the beach, so Damian has always had a bond with the ocean and you can see this reflected in his images. He now lives in Belgium where he captures the Dutch and Belgian coasts. But his home break in Baja Mexico will always have a special place in his heart.
From the Netherlands to Australia, Jop Hermans manages to freeze time on the water at the most impressive moments. His father was a photographer, so from a young age he had been walking around with a camera in his hand. In Australia his love for surfing became apparent, and in 2013 he decided to capture the surf of scheveningen. He has a unique view of this with what he calls “surfing landscapes”. In his photos, he emphasizes the environment in which surfing is done. You can see a good example of this in the picture above!
Ruben is a photographer from Amsterdam. Since 2011 he started photographing Surfers. For Ruben it was second nature to capture the surfers from his own perspective, from the water. One of his favorite spots for taking photos remains the Dutch coast. The contrast of the gray North Sea with the tropical spots like Fiji is something that continues to fascinate him, and we can certainly see this in his photos!
Danny grew up in Domburg, a famous surfing spot in the Netherlands. He saw the surfers in the water and started taking pictures of it. Surf photography is his passion, but certainly not the only thing he is involved with. Nowadays he takes photos of practically everything that happens on and around the beach. His images have been in various surf magazines and are regularly used for local newspapers.
Jelle’s passion is to capture the outdoors and his friends. From the cold Dutch coastline to sun-drenched portets in tropical environments. He distinguishes himself by the use of color. His photos ensure that you go out into the open air and want to experience the experiences he captures. Do not hesitate to be inspired by his instagram profile!
Robin has not been active as a surf photographer for very long. In 2014 he spent a summer in a surf camp in Portugal. Here he took atmospheric photos and, if he had the time, photos of surfers. Once back in the Netherlands it was impossible to get away from the coast. He distinguishes himself by taking photos from the water. For example in Scheveningen where most photos are taken of the beach. This creates unique images!
