In Hawaii, surfing was invented; For centuries, surfing on the beaches of this island group has been an art form. As a result, Hawaii is on the wish list of almost every surfer. Hawaii also has a very diverse population, an excellent climate and beautiful nature. The capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, is therefore seen as one of the most livable cities in the world. In short: all ingredients are present for a fantastic time on this magical archipelago.
This tropical archipelago is the 50th state in the United States and consists of a large number of larger and smaller volcanic islands. The archipelago is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and has a wonderful climate with few temperature differences. Hawaii therefore has a number of excellent surf spots where surfing spots have been surfing for centuries.

About Hawaii, USA

  • Hawaii:  this tropical island group is the fiftieth state of the United States and consists of a large number of larger and smaller volcanic islands. The island group is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and has a wonderful climate with few temperature differences. Surfing was once invented on this island group, and therefore has a number of excellent surf spots that have been surfed for centuries.
  • Honolulu:  the city has almost 400,000 inhabitants and is the most important city of the archipelago. Honolulu is seen as one of the most livable cities in the world, and is known as the most fit city in the US. On the beach of Honolulu you will find the famous Waikiki Beach, where you can surf great waves.

About the language school

  • English lessons: During the course you improve your English skill in groups of up to 15 international students. The focus of the course is on the four key skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. You practice both individually and in a group to achieve the best possible result. The school also believes that learning a second language will work best when fun is enjoyed. There is a lot of room for fun in the classroom!
  • Official certificates: our partner institute is an official exam centre of both the Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE and CPE) and the more academic-focused TOEFL and IELTS exams. This makes our language school in Hawaii ideal for studying for one of these certificates. There are several possibilities to follow the exam training sessions and take the exams. Send us an email or fill in the form at the bottom of the page for the possibilities.

About the students

  • The students:  you will learn English in a truly international environment. This way you will not only learn a lot about the English language and about Hawaii, but you will also learn a lot about the countries and cultures of your fellow students during your stay.

About the surf lessons

  • Surfing:  you can book an introductory surfing lesson for beginners. Then you can book surf lessons at the surf school depending on your level.
  • Surfing material:  apart from the surf lessons you will be able to rent a surfboard, but it is also possible to purchase a (second-hand) board. Both in and outside the school there will be plenty of opportunities to get a surfboard.

About the surf conditions

  • Beginners: we advise beginners to take surfing lessons. These can be arranged on location from the language school.
  • Intermediate: intermediate surfers are advised to take surfing lessons. These can be arranged on location from the language school.
  • Advanced:  advanced surfers can choose to only use surf equipment.

Accommodation

  • Host family:  you can choose to stay with a local host family. This is the best way to improve your English, because you will also have to communicate in English after school hours. You will get a private room with a comfortable bed and good lighting. In this way you will really experience the unique Hawaiian culture!
  • Student residence : in the student residence of the school you stay with your (international) fellow students in a student residence, where you will have your own room. The facilities of the student residence include air-conditioned rooms, a shared bathroom, a barbecue, wireless internet and laundry facilities. In addition, there are simple cooking facilities in your own room. Both the school and Waikiki beach are within cycling distance and can also be easily reached by bus.

What is there to do?

  • Nature:  the volcanic islands of Hawaii offer endless opportunities for nature lovers. You can go hiking, mountain biking and kayaking in various places in Hawaii.
  • Sporting activities:  a large number of sporting activities are organized from the language school. You can, for example, participate in yoga sessions, football matches, beach volleyball, capoeira and much more.
  • Aquatic life:  since Hawaii is an island group, the ocean plays a very central role. This way you can also participate in many activities in and around the water. For example, a sailing trip is regularly organized. You can also dive and / or snorkel and spot whales or dolphins.

Location

You can find the location of the language school on the map below. Below you will find the best way(s) to get there.

  • There are different ways to fly to Hawaii. One way is to fly from Europe to New York on a Friday. On Sunday you will continue to Hawaii. These tickets are also offered more cheaply and you also cut the journey in two. In addition, it is of course fantastic to spend a weekend in New York!
  • If you book one of the two residences, the airport pick-up is included. If you book a host family, you can book a transfer (price on request), take a taxi or catch a bus yourself (depending on where your host family is located).

I love GV Hawaii. This is a really good English language school. Teachers and staff are very friendly and very kind. They are like "Ohana"(means family in Hawaiian language).

wanted to speak English fluently. I made a best choice to study at GV Hawaii. GV has a very strict English only policy. At first it was not easy to speak English all the time but because of this policy, my English skill improved rapidly. Also I was staying at Kapiolani residence and it was good for me. There were students from other countries at the residence and I had to speak in English to communication with them. This was also a good experience for me to get to know different cultures while practicing my English. In addition, staying at the residence was easier for me to make new friends too. I am very happy with this school. I gained a confidence in myself through studying English at GV and at the same time I made a lot of friends from all over the world! Thank you very much ! I strongly recommend GV if you want to improve your English!

I have been a neighbor of the Kapiolani Residence for 4 years now. GVH has failed to monitor the late night noise levels of its students for years. This student housing seem

to promote the college party lifestyle by allowing its students to drink and make loud noise throughout the night without thought of their neighbors or any sort of consequence. The tenants are only here for a few months at a time so they can care less about the noise they make, they will never be back. The property owners could care less because for an apartment they would be only getting $1,800 for per month, they are getting upwards of $3,000 per month if not more. It probably is a good school to go to but its obviously not teaching etiquette in its curriculum. This riff raff needs to stop. **EDIT APRIL 2019 STILL THE SAME SITUATION 5 YEARS LATER. KAPIOLANI RESIDENCE IS LISTED AS A DORMITORY ON GVH WEBSITE SO WHOEVER RESPONDED TO MY REVIEW PLEASE DON'T SAY THE 2 ARE NOT CONNECTED. MY REVIEW IS MY REVIEW, COME SPEND A FEW NIGHTS AT MY PLACE AND SEE. MAHALOS
