Learn Spanish in Tenerife can be done all year round and it is also very good to combine with surfing. The language school in beautiful Puerto de la Cruz also offers surf lessons so you can do this nice combination. Tenerife is seen by many as the most beautiful of all Canary Island
Most of the fellow students come alone and this always has a very open atmosphere that everyone is looking for. You stay in a host family or in a shared apartment, so you can get to know the island in the way that is best for you. Besides Spanish and possibly surf you have much more to do in Tenerife.

About Spanish and Surf on Tenerife

Below you will read everything you would want to know about this surf + language program in Tenerife, Spain. In case anything is unclear to you, feel free to reach out to us.

About Tenerife, Spain

  • Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife: this town is located in the northwest of the island. The road to the center takes you along the amazing coastline of Tenerife, which is definitely worth taking a few times. The town offers everything you need, from nice restaurants to bars, a number of beautiful beaches and a pleasant center. ‘Puerto’ gives you a ‘village feeling’, where you will often see people greeting each other on the street while there is a nice mix of locals and tourists.
  • Canary Islands, Spain: this group of islands is located at the height of southern Morocco, giving it a great climate all year round. Of the most famous islands (Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma), Tenerife is the most green. In addition, it has beautiful ‘black beaches’ with clear blue water. From Tenerife it is quite possible to also visit the other Canary Islands (and even Morocco).

About the language school

  • About the language school: the language school in Tenerife enjoys a beautiful location, right next to the Botanical Gardens of Puerto de la Cruz. The classrooms are equipped with modern equipment so that the lessons are extremely interactive. The school has its own café, ideal for practicing your Spanish even after class.
  • Accreditations & awards:  this language school has the accreditation of Instituto Cervantes , Fedele  and is also a recognized examination center for various Spanish language exams.

About the language lessons

  • Spanish lesson: You follow 20 lessons of 45 minutes each week. You will of course be assigned to your level, so that you and your fellow students will make the same progress. The lessons consist of speaking, listening and grammar, and of course you are also busy reading so that you will work on all language competences.
  • Spanish and Surf: in addition to the 20 lessons per week (see above), you follow 120 minutes of surf lessons 5 days a week. These lessons are for surfers of all levels, so feel especially welcome. These lessons consist of a combination of both theory and practice, so that you learn to surf while also getting to know the ‘theory of surfing’.
  • Starting dates: in principle you can start every Monday of the year with the Spanish or Spanish and Surf courses. Beginners (in Spanish) are advised to start on the first or third Monday of the month. Arrival on Tenerife would then be on a Sunday.
  • Language test:  before you start you will do an online language test to determine your level.

About the students

  • The students: you will learn Spanish in a truly international environment. This way you will not only learn a lot about the Spanish language and about the Canary Islands, but you will also learn a lot about the countries and cultures of your fellow students during your stay. Most students come from other European countries, America / Canada or Australia, but more and more students from Asian or African countries are finding their way to Puerto de la Cruz.

About the surf lessons

  • Surf lessons : the surf lessons are given by one of the most renowned surf schools on the island; La Marea Surf School. 5 days a week you will receive 2 hours of surfing lessons, with the focus on both the practical side and the theory side of surfing. So you learn how to surf and you also know the rules. The surfing lessons take place at Playa Martiánez, which has a truly ideal wave. The wave is calm and very long, so you can stay extra long.
  • Material: in addition to surfing lessons, surfing is certainly possible. The surf school also rents surfboards and can give you a good deal (as a student of the language school).

About the surf conditions

  • The surfing lessons are given at different levels. The surf instructors will ensure that you get lessons at your level, even if you have never surfed you will learn this quickly. Most students taking surf lessons are starting.
  • If you are an experienced surfer, we recommend that you purchase a second-hand surfboard on location.

The following applies to both types of accommodation: Check-in is on Sunday, check-out on Saturday. It is possible (if available) to book separate nights (before or after your regular stay).

  • Shared apartment: all apartments are within walking distance of the school and the center. You get your own room and the apartments are equipped with most conveniences (kitchen, washing machine, iron). You will share the apartments with others. This can be students of the language school, but also other people (eg local students).
  • Host family: choose to stay with a host family and get the real local experience. The houses are all at max. 25 minutes walk from the school. The families consist of different compositions and everyone has experience in hosting students who learn Spanish. You will practice a lot of Spanish anyway – at your own level. You get your own room and towels and bed linen are provided. Breakfast is included and you can also choose to have dinner with the family.

What is there to do?

  • El Teide: this volcano is the highest in Spain and definitely worth a visit. You can do this with an organized trip from the school or independently. The view, nature and cosiness are definitely worth it.
  • Salsa & Flamenco:  the language school offers free Salsa and Flamenco lessons. So if you like to give this a try, this is your chance!
  • Fuerteventura:  this beautiful island is close to Tenerife and you can visit it very well during the weekend. It is great to surf and the landscapes are beautiful.
  • Other activities: everything is organized from the language school. Think of a beach volleyball tournament, a visit to the Botanical Gardens, a trip to Masca or Santa Cruz and much more. You will never be bored! Some activities are included in the price, for other activities a (small) contribution is requested.

You can find the location of the language school on the map below. Below you will find the best way(s) to get there.

FUIA was an excellent choice. The atmosphere and the environment at the school is very friendly, the teachers are very approachable. It is easy to socialize (with teachers and

other students as well) as the school creates many opportunities, which is perfect if you do your language stay alone. The admin staff is very kind, knows most students by name and help with everything they can. I initially booked two weeks, but extended my stay for a month - I think it says it all :) Thanks FUIA, volveré!

If you are looking for seminars to attend while staying in Tenerife, you need to check out the FU International Academy. The mentors there Orsi, Alberto, Katya and Veronica we

If you are one of those suits who never lays down their tie, I will not recommend this school. However, if you are open-minded, willing to learn and able to enjoy the company

f others, I will totally recommend this institution. Why? If you like to know, you will find the long story below. The heart of this language school is the team. You will find a wide range of characters. The female teacher characters vary from accurate in all respects, over having their feet firmly on the ground, to impulsive ones full of energy and “joie de vivre”. The teaching male characters vary from macho-look-a-like to thoughtful ones. All of them follow the contents of the international accepted educational books. The training small talk give you the feeling of an actual talk in Spanish. The student groups for the practice are combined from the lecturers were combined properly. A funny way to train understanding is “typing”-karaoke. Some teachers motivate more, others criticize more, nevertheless all in all, a perfect combination of personalities! The reception of the faculty management is very friendly and helpful. From the day you will get assistance, even if you have unpredictable questions. Just three examples during my time: One student did not feel comfortable with the class level, it was adapted. An online code did not work, a new one was organized. I needed a quit place, as I had to give a remote talk during lessons, I got one. Studies are based on educational books, individual for each level. However, the teachers know how to make the lessons entertaining. Discussing stories of the life, listening the music and write the lyrics down make it easy to learn. The number of participants was max. 6 in the morning and 2 in the intensive courses in the afternoon. Every day is an optional activity after school. You will surely not be a wine connoisseur, tour guide or botanist after those activities, but you practice Spanish in a relaxed way. Only the Yoga-teacher had the real claim to transfer her knowledge and she did it well. Another highlight of the school is the FU-Café (you find it in the internet). Always friendly, even if they are stressed (e.g., when up to 8 classes have break at same time). The prices are low and the portion bigger than expected. You should not expect a 5-course menu, but you will get freshly prepared food. If the dishes fit your needs or not, you can check in also in the internet (“La Carta”). It is very convenient to take your coffee and small breakfast or “BOCADILLOS” directly on the terrace of the school. And as the owner is the same for school and café, you will find designated tables, where you can eat your own food, too. If this is not sufficient, you find a supermarket one floor below the school. Just the pastry shop aside from the supermarket I don’t like to recommend … After school the surrounding opens a wide range of activities and even the Teide can be reached by bus, same as several nice small towns at the coast. By foot you can reach the old town in 12 min and ~100 m lower. There it is up to you, if you go to a fancy location and take tourist food or look for small familial restaurant, bakeries or Churro booths and eat authentic excellent food. However, the town has something to offer for everyone, even Mexican cocktail bar or karaoke. Also, within a small walk, you will find nice beaches. Maintained or hidden and only accessible by surfing or climbing. So finally, when I had to flight back home, I missed the school much more than the island!
