The British surfing community was out in force on Friday the 10th of September for the inaugural Ground Swell (www.groundswellcic.com) Charity Ball, at the Atlantic Hotel Newquay.
The Ground Swell community interest company (cic) arranged a glamorous sit down black tie event to promote and support their mission of forwarding British surfing from a young age. With a charity auction and raffle, with prizes including a holiday for two to Morocco and signed products by some of the best surfers and surfing royalty in the world, the 120 guests had every opportunity to show their support and back the cause.
There was also great entertainment with the premiere of Mitch Corbett’s documentary ‘Indolerium’ and the hilarious comedy surf film ‘The Retro Comp’, all by British film maker Timmy Boydell of TR7 productions. This was followed by music from The Last Of The Pilots and DJing by Ground Swell’s own Josh Hughes to round of a great night.
Ground Swell cic, is a Surf foundation based in Newquay, dedicated to the future of British surfing and to creating careers for young people in the surfing industry. They have been sponsoring the Pro Junior division of the UKPST this year and aim to do so for the future, but need to continue to find funding and industry support. Their idea to create a top notch fundraising night was therefore a huge success, with massive support from the Atlantic Hotel, who sponsored the event and were amazing hosts. The event was also supported by many of the premier surf companies, with contributions and appearances by Seabase, Monster Energy drinks, Carve magazine, the RNLI, Tiki, O’Neil, Hurley, A1surf.com, The UKPSA, The BSA, Fox, Newquays finest.com, Excess Energy Communications, Sunset Surf shop, Driftwood Galleries, and Retallack Resort and Spa and The Loop Flowrider.
Event organisers Ben Jones and Corrine Evans were ecstatic at the turnout for the event and also delighted about how generously everyone gave of their time and financial support. The hope is now to make the event a yearly occurrence so the surfing community can continue to show its support. A final total of the how much was raised on is still being counted and will be announced shortly.
Ben Jones from Ground Swell said “Everyone at Ground Swell was extremely happy with how the night went and how generously everyone gave in every possible way. We would like to thank all those that came and donated prizes and products. It just goes to show that there is real commitment around supporting the future of the youngsters in British surfing. It’s been an amazing night and we already can’t wait for next years event which we hope can be even bigger and better”
