San Sebastian, located in the Spanish Basque Country, is a bustling city where you can experience the true spanish lifestyle. This city has fantastic cuisine, beautiful beaches with excellent surf spots, many museums and a vibrant nightlife. It is therefore no coincidence that this city was the European Capital of Culture in 2016. In Donostia, as this city is called in Basque, you will find a very large cultural offer. There are several excellent museums in San Sebastian, but it is the events calendar that really catches the eye. A number of international events take place in San Sebastian, making a (surfing) holiday in San Sebastian even more fun!   1. Heineken Jazz Festival (24 – 28 july 2019): One of Europe’s biggest jazz festivals takes over San Sebastian with major concerts, bands playing in the streets and performances in bars and restaurant. Info:
  2. Music Fortnight (1 – 31 august 2019): this classical music festival was founded in 1939 and is therefore the oldest music festival in Spain, and one of the oldest in Europe. Info: 
  3. Semana Grande (10 – 17 august 2019): “The Great Week” of San Sebastian is the biggest party of the year. The city features numerous concerts, the best parties, attractions for children and many other activities. Info:
  4. International fireworks competition (10 – 17 august 2019): The fireworks show takes place every evening during Semana Grande, and is one of the highlights of this fantastic week. Fireworks experts from all over the world compete against each other to get the most spectacular show. Info:
  5. Regatta Bandera de la Concha (1 en 8 september 2019): San Sebastian’s regatta (sailing competition) consists of 2 routes. The first route starts in Hendaye, France and ends in the La Concha bay of San Sebastian. The second route takes place entirely in the bay of La Concha.
