Beach clean-ups are very popular at the moment, but there is still a lot of work to be done. We are convinced that most of the effort needs to be put into providing information about waste and plastic (remediation is better than curing), but beach clean-ups are certainly a good thing. Ricardo, from the Gota d’Agua Surf House, in Caparica, organizes the weekly cleaning of the beaches around Caparica and Lisbon. SurfaWhile went by.
192 kilos of trash in an hour
With a team of around 15 guests, the men from the surf house and SurfaWhile, we set to work. Near Covo do Vapor, where the Taag river flows into the Atlantic, we have cleaned a piece of land – something that clearly had not happened for a long time. Olmo from SurfaWhile: ” some pieces of plastic had been there for so long, that now they just crumble when you want to pick them up. I was really shocked by that. ” In addition to many plastic and glass bottles, some large objects were found.
In addition to two toilet bowls (we sincerely wondered how this ended up there), a whole bumper of a car was found. It was clear that this was really a place where everyone just dumped his or her trash. A sad thing to see.
After more than an hour, this place looked a lot better. Ricardo and the other boys from Gota have weighed everything and in total they came to 192 kilos, 192 kilos !!! It is clear that this really helps, keep it up guys!
